Summary

Users can access the Hearings platform on an iPad however there is some limited functionality as the software is designed to be used on a computer / laptop.

We've set out the known functionality limitations below.

Functionality Limitations

Recommended Browser
  • Whilst we generally recommend accessing Opus via Google Chrome from a computer / laptop, we’d recommend using Safari for optimal performance on an iPad.
Annotations with Apple Pencil
  • The Apple pencil can be used to highlight text within the documents (assuming the documents are text searchable) and subsequently write within the Annotation tool window. The handwritten annotation should convert to text on the basis that the iPad has the relevant functionalities enabled.
  • The pencil is an Apple based functionality and as we are in a testing phase of using an Apple pencil, we are unable to confirm whether users will encounter issues when trying to create notes with the pencil as opposed to the standard keyboard.
  • The annotation functionality should be available from the Annotation tool window, with users needing to ensure the notes are made to the correct recipient via the To: dropdown. More information on Annotation tool functionality can be found here.
Hyperlinks
  • Hyperlink functionality works slightly differently on iPads across Safari and Chrome:
    • Safari - Users can click the hyperlinked reference to open the destination document.
    • Chrome - Users will need to click and hold for 1-2 seconds to open the destination document.
  • The destination document should open in a new browser tab and users will need to ensure their pop-ups are not blocked to allow the secondary tab to open.
Export - Individual Documents
  • Users can export documents from the platform using an iPad on a per document basis only. To do so:
    1. Export from the Document Viewer - Follow the steps in the Viewing a Document (Single Document only) guide. Click here to view the guide.
    2. Allow Prompt - Once run, select Allow on the Allow / Block pop-up to begin the download and the document should open within a new tab.
    3. Save Document to Files - When viewing the export, save the document to the Files storage on the iPad.
Export - Multiple Documents
  • Users are currently unable to export multiple documents at once when using an iPad.
  • If offline documents for iPad are required, we would advise exporting them in bulk on a computer / laptop first and then transferring them to an iPad. More information on exporting documents in bulk can be found here
  • We'd generally recommend using the documents within the platform rather than annotating offline PDF copies for the following reasons:
    1. Users may not be working from the most up-to-date version of files which can result in work product being duplicated or lost unnecessarily. For example, if a user is annotating an offline PDF document and the file is replaced online, they will be working from an outdated copy offline and will need to re-export and re-annotate accordingly.
    2. Annotating documents online allows users to instantly share their work product with other members of the team, which they can reply to within the context of the documents, allowing for efficient review and collaboration.
